Introducing Competitions 2.0

When we first introduced competitions back in 2017, the goal was simple: give racers a new way to compete beyond just typing speed and number of races. Since then, competitions have become a core part of TypeRacer, and now we’ve rebuilt them from the ground up.

The original system had some problems. Not all competitions actually awarded medals, and all race modes counted toward standings, which didn’t always reflect competitive play. Competitions 2.0 addresses all of that.

Classic Competitions

Daily, Weekly, Monthly, and Yearly competitions are still here, and they’re still based on points. Points are calculated as the number of words typed multiplied by your typing speed (in words per second).

What’s changed is that only multiplayer races now count. Practice, ghost racing, and private rooms no longer contribute to Classic Competition standings.

Competitions are currently available on the main TypeRacer site at play.typeracer.com, with plans to expand to more Universes of TypeRacer over time!

New: Quote of the Day

Competitions 2.0 introduces a new competition type: Quote of the Day.

Every day, a new quote is selected for everyone to type. It’s a pure speed competition. Here’s how it works:

  • A fresh quote is posted each day
  • Played in a dedicated Quote of the Day mode
  • All races in this mode are saved automatically, so you don’t need to manually save
  • Open to everyone. Race as many times as you want to improve your time
  • The fastest speed wins

Badges

The old first, second, and third place medals have been replaced with a new badges system. Instead of separate gold, silver, and bronze medals, you now earn a single badge for placing in the top 3. It doesn’t matter if you’re first, second, or third. If you place top 3, you win and you earn the badge. Each time you earn a badge, it increments toward the next level, and the badge evolves visually as it levels up.

Classic Competitions are still won by having the most points.

If you already had medals from the old system, don’t worry. All existing medals have been converted to badges, so you’re not starting from zero.

Badges Are Global

Badges are global. As we expand competitions to more Universes of TypeRacer, placing in the top 3 anywhere will level up the same badge.

More Badges Coming Soon

We plan to add more badges over time, including one-time badges for completing specific achievements on TypeRacer.

Competitions Page

There’s a new Competitions page where you can browse active competitions, view standings, and track your progress.

Events (Coming Soon)

The new system supports running custom event competitions across TypeRacer. We’ll have more to share on this soon.

API Support

All competition and badge data is available through the TypeRacer API. You can pull competition standings, badge levels, and more programmatically.

If you’re interested in the old medal data from the previous system, that can still be accessed and calculated through the API as well.

The goal with Competitions 2.0 was to make things fairer, support new types of competitions, and give the awards system room to grow. We hope the new badges give you another reason to value your TypeRacer account. See you on the track.
