TypeRacer Goes International

Posted on November 23, 2009. Filed under: TypeRacer News |

Typing in other languages has been the #1 most requested feature since way back when TypeRacer was born.  Today we’re launching the first international release of TypeRacer with support for 51 languages!

Click on the change your language link at the bottom of the homepage to see the full selection.  The name and flag of the language you’ve selected will appear under the logo in the upper left corner.  Your race results and typing speed will be saved separately for each, so it’s easy to track your progress in any language.

The scorecard now displays the country where each racer is located.

TypeRacer has always appealed to an international audience, and I’m happy to give you all the ability to race in your language.  Even if English is your primary language, it’s fun to learn how to type in other languages.  So far, I’ve mastered Spanish and French, and struggling with Russian, as you can see in the screenshot above.

Typing speed, by default, is measured in words per minute for English and in characters per minute for other languages, but you can always chose the format that's best for you. Just click on the CPM (or WPM) link at the top of the homepage to save your preference.

This release represents a giant leap into the future for TypeRacer, but it isn’t perferct.  For one thing, the text translations need more work.  We used Google Translate on the English texts and the results, at best, are easy to type but don’t make much sense.  In the worst case, some of the translations might contain left-over English characters and punctuation, requiring a brief switch of keyboard layouts to type them.  We’ve tried to correct all the texts to the best of our ability, but with all these languages, we now have 23000 texts to keep track of!  Let us know if you see any errors in your language and we’ll try to fix them right away.

TypeRacer International is still a work in progress.  Over the coming months, we’ll work on improving the text quality and also translating the menus and captions.  But the main thing right now is to get more people typing in other languages, so that you’re not just racing against bots.  We need your help to spread the word.  Send out the URL for the homepage in your language to all your friends or go head-to-head with them in a private racetrack for your language of choice.  We have empty high scores to fill in every language, so start racing!

There was a time —a few years ago— when I was able to touch-type in Russian.

As for the subject of […] In the worst case, some of the translations might contain left-over English characters and punctuation, requiring a brief switch of keyboard layouts to type them. […] I never have had this kind of trouble because my keyboard is configured for Español (México) and this layout includes Mexican Spanish and American English in itself.

Congratulations Alex Epshteyn!

Long Live the TypeRacer!

good i love type racer cause i can race my friends in typing class !

Trenton (trenton07) is a cheater. He uses some kind of program 100%. Delete his account.

Please Alex:

Regarding the flag_tiled_logo1.png

Could you replace any of the repeated country flags with one of Mexico?

For example, there are four flags of Italy in the image.

I really feel very bad not seeing my beloved Mexican flag in the image.

Thank You Very Much.

First of all how are we supposed to know what we are saying when we write in different languages. and second of all, when was typeracer born?

wOw.. cool.. we can now learn other languages
thru typeracer

I have just typed 106wpm and been asked to take test but while I was taking it after about 2 seconds it submitted itself automatically with the folling message: 84000 wpm
Accuracy: 3%

Sorry – you failed the typing test because your accuracy was too low. Please try again – otherwise your score for the current race will not be saved. Remember, some mistakes are allowed, so don’t worry about fixing your typos.
Try again?
Please fix Bug Alex!!!
BTW my average is about 76wpm and I raced as guest account.

i can’t write in my own language,i ve setted my keyboard but its still not working, when it comes to special accents and stuff like that i ca’t type

The “Typing challenge” (cheat detector) in the Chinese language gives pictures with white squares as text.

I think you have done a great job ^_^
I’d like to recommend something that can be improved:
1) In my language(Vietnamese), I have problems in typing special character. For example, to type “chào” (hello), I must type ‘c’,’h’,’a’,’f’,’o’ (using Telex IME). But after I type ‘a’, it is counted as a typo, because ‘à’ ‘a’.

2) The google translate may be good if we just want to have a quick & general understanding. It’s crap otherwise, and I sometimes don’t get what I’m typing(especially the lyric)

The texts in catalan have tons of errors. I suggest you to correct it or change it… I think I am the only user, but Ill tell my friends! Nice to see catalan here.

I think I found a bug: I typed exactly in Vietnamese, but the program simply didn’t proceed to the next word.
Reason: I think it’s maybe because there’s more than one way to type a word in Vietnamese. Globalization is hard, anyway.

I am getting random bugs ever since the new version was rolled.
For example:
* my score is 0 until the end of the race;
* my score was marked 0 and not counted due to time out, although there was at least one more minute left at the counter
* many times the red box appears saying something wrong has happened.

The site was rock solid before the new release, so I am pretty sure it was caused by it. I love the site and it helped me a lot (moved from nil to 50 wpm on colemak within three weeks, with relaxed training) – but these bugs have to be cleared.

Type Racer Rocks!

Yuval – if you’re using Firefox, make sure you don’t have the Ad Block Plus extension enabled because it’s misbehaving on the latest javascript code. This will be fixed for the next release, of course.

De la banderita de México, nada, ¿verdad?

yaya good game kailey!

This is great news! Does it mean that I can finally race my friends in pig latin?

typeracer: You were right! I disabled adblockplus and it works perfectly now.

Thanks for the hard work!

Oh, please help me. I can’t type in Vietnamese. Whenever I type a special character, it comes typo, and I have to press “enter” to continue typing another word. How can I type if I have to enter after EACH word?
Maybe I don’t know how to type in the right way. Can somebody help me with this?

Congrats RambooUAE! 150wpm Great work!!!

RambooUAE is using a program. Please verify then delete.

Raheema, Jensen: Almost EVERYONE on latest high-scores is using a program! Let the cheaters bask in their sheer folly; Those who put in REAL keyboard time will have the last laugh. 😉

raas: most people on recent high scores are NOT using a program. I’ve raced RamboUAE many times, he is legitimate.

I am faster than him, and I don’t use a program. There are plenty of people who can type 140-150 legitimately (and some quite a bit higher).

raas: i agree with anonymous, i have raced RAMBOO 100’s of times and believe he HAS put in “real keyboard time” and is legit.
Jensen: can’t you get on the board? have some faith 🙂 many people on the latest 20 can type, cheaters are a minority.

Google translate makes text no meaning in other languages. I wonder why typeracer doesn’t collect texts which are originally from those languages. Any typeracer can help you do so. The text we type in our own languages will be more meaningful and interesting than those craps. We also can know more about our literature.

The “Typing challenge” (cheat detector) in the Chinese language still gives pictures with white squares as text……

I think the suggestion by bluestar49 is an excellent one.

In my own opinion those national texts had to be from books written in their respective national languages —not translations from other languages.

(( The same thing for the case of movies and songs. ))

Of course I would contribute a big bunch of interesting Spanish language passages.

Greetings from Mexico City.

I’ve just known the typeracer has released the international feature, so just tried to type in Japanese.

I made 113 cpm in Japanese, but the system suspected if I was cheating. The system gave tests, however, I couldn’t understand what were wrote in the test box.

I’m hoping if the system displays proper Japanese characters. Wondering if the character codes are different between what the system uses and what the browser uses?

I’m using Firefox with adblock plug-in. However, after disable adblock plug-in, still I cannot read the cheating test sentence, only displays white blocks and curious lines….

Initially, I appreciate it Raheema , “Proud of the certificate”

As Anonymous and Guest45974 said, I’m not fast in typing, but some times push myself strongly on the keyboard
First, typed 140 words per minute after that, 146 words per minute till reached to 150 words

Of course, depends on sentences refined

When I entered the site for the first time I was typing 50 words per minute maximum, but now the average of almost 90 words per minute

once again, thank you typeracer):

@Typeracer: Jensen was correct, RambooUAE uses a program sometimes, races for real sometimes.
@RambooUAE: If you’re not a cheat FINISH (don’t run away) texts containing parentheses(), with scores 101wpm+ which should be easy for you now that your average is “almost 90”
@Any cheater: Likewise as with RambooUAE – FINISH those texts at your claimed speeds! Revenge against cheaters, ego stroking etc., gets you nowhere! Kindly desist.
@Any “human” typist: Please don’t be dejected by the cheats, remember hard work doesn’t go unrewarded.

we know how 2 spot these fakes + recognize true typists thanX

I finished more than three thousands of race, you try to end more than 10 thousand race and you will see why I withdrew sometimes.

If you do not believe me, Ask Aram, who typed 142 words per minute versus 136 words per minute in the same race

And he has an average of 82 words per minute, versus 87 words per minute. Naturally, I could type 150 words versus 142 words from Aram. Not to mention the difference between the races between us

In addition,; there are many players I typed with them more than 140 + words per minute such as Dislys

By the way,

could you imagine I cheated after completing all those races

your words are out of mind…..

If this score put pressure on you , I will ask that site to delete it. The most important thing is your satisfaction!!..

This is the best I can do…

I think that is fair enough):
No more comment):

At last we should see more typemasters on the latest 20 now that Idris(islamalways.com) has enlightened us of how to spot the cheaters. Thanks bro.

To encourage people to compete in a tongue, we must have well translated texts.

That’s why I think that we must find a solution for “entrust” texts to someone, someone who will be a regular typer in his own language, of course, who will translate texts according to the good spelling and grammar rules appropriate to each country.

I noticed, in my own language, the french, (one of the most beautiful tongue in the world), be massacred by horrible various mistakes.

Do something quickly, please, it would be cool.

Otherwise, congrats for your work, that’s nice.

Greetings from Mexico City.

bluestar49 has a great idea.
But, i think license and permission will be a great deal on that one.
If admin still decided to use recent phrases, why don’t ask typeracer user from foreign countries to translate it first. I’m pretty sure they’ll help.

I myself would love to translate those phrases to Indonesian language.

Great job guys! Keep up the good work!

Oooooh yes!

This is great!

exelente.

Excelente excelente excelente.

Typeracer.com is one of my favorite sites, and I love going on it when I have free time. I can’t get enough of it!

RambooUAE I’ve enjoyed racing you many times with sds, Dilys and others, when you were typing in high 70’s and you didn’t have a century yet. Whilst we have made modest improvements since that time your speed has increased dramatically! How have you done this? Please share – so we too can improve!

NB. IF you are using a program (as many now suspect) please stop it! come back and race for fun again and just forget the cheaters.

regards, Salaams.

Cette programe est tres bien mais je deteste que je ne peux pas ecrie dans bien francais parce-que jai le american systeme et ils nai pas le francais systeme. Will anyone delete this account?

Zoran – “yuckyuck” has been deleted. Thanks for the report.

I request that all those accusing various people of cheating bear in mind that though you may not imagine how someone could type so quickly as you see posted on the leaderboard, it is quite possible and done routinely. Please accept that you are not able to watch another race participant and determine that they are cheating, even if you think you know very well how patterns in speed should appear during a single race, or how much a person’s scores should vary from the average. You don’t.

Kindly use the report feature and save us all the stress of slander.

This game is awsome. I have learned so much in little time. Oh and Merry Christmas!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A vision from a couple of minutes ago:

Every word —every competition word— is like a chord in the classical guitar.

(( You can find difficult chords and it is a REAL pleasure to gradually master their intricacies —their marvelous and stimulative complexities. ))

As far as I know, English language has around One Million words which you can consider as One Million classical guitar chords.

In rock music terms, words like “of”, “in”, “is”, “to”, “an”, “if”, “as”, “be” and so forth are “power chords” —a very famous ingredient of heavy metal music.

***

I LOVE TO TOUCH-TYPE!

*** ***

By the way, I do believe in Megaracers and Very Good QWERTY and Dvorak Keyboards.

Who really cares about REAL cheaters? —not the “suspect” or “imaginary” ones.

Real cheaters don’t go anywhere —they personally don’t achieve nothing, they degrade their minds doing that thing.

Do you know a very known and obvious secret? Don’t talk about cheaters and eventually they will dissolve by themselves; in an HORRENDOUS and MORBID way they want to acquire some “notoriety” or “fame”: Let’s ignore them.

***

I don’t believe RambooUAE is a typing fraudster —he currently has 35310 typeraces completed.

Would you cheat thousands and thousands of times without go crazy?

FELIZ Navidad para toda la gente TypeRacer: para el titular del website y para todas las competidoras y todos los competidores.

I wish you a tasty Christmas dinner accompanied with cheerful drinks and delicious desserts.

Tons of Happiness to ALL typeracers: the fastest and the slowest —the slowest and the fastest.

Is email to the support address ignored? I reported an obvious cheater (carlos rodriguez (yo_el10) ) but it looks like nothing was done.

the site is too slow with me.I play only one race and then I can’t enter the next race. Also, I can’t enter the site sometimes. Is that a problem for everyone or just me,,,, could anyone tell me. If the problem with me only ,, I will format my laptop

RambooUAE: Formatting likely won’t help. Is your computer generally slow or is it just Typeracer? You may want to try a different browser.

I would firstly suspect the internet connection speed. If you test using speedtest.net or http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest what do you get?

People, does anyone know where is Dufour Dominic??? What is happening with him?

Hi Jack Aviado

I used ” Net access”

Those numbers appeared

234 Kb/s 46 Kb/s 322ms

The problem is on the site only, I can access to the other sites…

Someone please explain this incredible result:

Quote from Civilization IV:
1 149 wpm Kevin McCrumb(spacedominator)
2 145 wpm Per Vognsen (pervognsen)
3 137 wpm Luke Edwards (potatoman)
4 136 wpm annie (anniea)
5 136 wpm Thierrry (thierry_)
6 *136 wpm RambooUAE (killingtype)*
7 133 wpm annie (anniea)
8 131 wpm Luke Edwards (potatoman)
9 130 wpm Anthony (mantipula)
10 130 wpm Brian Ng (existentialism)

the players(by place order) avg.(last 10), avg.(all time) and best race respectively;

1. 136, 129.90, 180
2. 142, 138.9, 172
3. 136, 120.317 150
4. 114, 112.070 167
5. 121, 116.925 151
6.* 96, 88.091 150*
7. 114, 112.070 167
8. 136, 120.317 172
9. 110, 111.82 142
10. 128, 115.16 143

How is it that someone as slow as RambooUAE is 6th fastest on this quote? Is he STILL credible to you?

¿Por qué siempre que algún payaso anda criticando a algún typeracer tiene qué hacerlo como un maldito “Anonymous”?

***

[…] How is it that someone as slow as RambooUAE is 6th fastest on this quote? Is he STILL credible to you? […]

I feel offended because here in the TypeRacer there are more “slow” competitors than Megaracers.

We “slow” typeracers are NOT inferior to any .u.k.n. speed freak.

I know that the Megaracer skill level has decent competitors but everywhere you can find gossips.

Among other things, to attack someone else as an anonymous means that YOU lack the courage to make an statement under your REAL name.

Thank You Very Much Anonymous —this is the best way to begin a cold and rainy day.

I really HOPE that someday each and every slow typeracer in the world became an IMPROVED and fast typist.

I ABSOLUTELY know that the TypeRacer helps.

When I am in a typerace I use to imagine it as a COMMUNAL touch-typing practice —like to be practicing but at the same time playing to be a “fast” typist.

I think this is something which makes the TypeRacer so DIFFERENT from other Internet pastimes: Here you practice (you play) the touch-typing technique but your improved accuracy and swiftness integrates into your life as a very useful ability and one big benefit of that ability is to be apt to transcribe your thoughts and ideas into the word processor without so much clutter.

google transliterate does helps to type in different language – example Hindi but typeracer does not accept it. is there anyway to make this helpful with out installing language packs.

Hi Faris.

The default language for Typeracer is English, and the other languages exist in their own “universes”. If you want to switch to a different language, you have to click the link each time you come to the page, and you will see the “universe” for that language. Hopefully in the future we will have time to make Typeracer easier to use for people who don’t want to type in English. For now, please be patient and choose your language each time you come to Typeracer.
