Typing Replays

Posted on June 3, 2017. Filed under: TypeRacer News |

We’ve just rolled out an update of TypeRacer, featuring a new and improved typing interface, which allows us to record your actual typing and show you a replay at the end of the race.  It looks like this:

JavaRelease51-TypingLogReplayPlayer

You can use the playback controls to see exactly what you typed, while the analysis section below the replay shows you a list of words where you made mistakes you made (clicking on these words takes you to that spot in the replay).  You’ll notice that there’s also a column chart that shows your typing speed on different segments of the text.

I hope you like this new feature.  Please let us know if you have any comments or suggestions!

TypeRacer has become Nitro Type in one swift update. My WPM has dropped dramatically as a result. Please revert this update, or at least have an option to turn this feature off.

Did you make any change to the algorithm that calculates accuracy data? My accuracy percentage results have suddenly gone up a lot even though I’m making about as many mistakes as I did previously. Thanks!

Yes, we did. I believe that the new algorithm is more accurate (no pun intended :))

typeracer, I wonder if you could elaborate a little bit on this — specifically, what would have been considered an error before that isn’t being so considered now by the new accuracy algorithm?

@John
I believe the change is like this: Before, if the word was “know” and you typed “konw” it would register 3 errors. Basically all subsequent chars after the first incorrect char would still count against you. Now that would only register as 1 error

This is what I am looking for. It is amazing. I would suggest that the paragraph should be kept above cars because if the cars are more the paragraph would go down making our heads to bend down causing pain while typing it. It would be better if the countdown timer of 10 seconds is placed at the side but not on the paragraph as this allows us to read the paragraph before the race.

Make an option to turn it off please, it just distracts people

Thanks for your feedback. I just released an update that allows you to choose the old typing interface if you prefer.

Very cool features 🙂

Can we have the “Show one line at a time” back please?

Yes! I just released an update that allows you to choose the old typing interface if you prefer.

Is it possible for you to add a functionality that can remove the cursor while typing (while still being able to see it in “replay”)? When typing before this update, mucle memory had adapted so that words were corrected automatically without thinking. The new cursor is quite annoying, since it forces me to think before correcting a misspelling, instead of being able to do it automatically. Hope “hide cursor while typing” functionality can be added, as I really enjoy this game.

Is it possible to turn off this new feature? While I enjoy the data, the scrolling and color changes in the text are distracting. Thanks!

I don’t like it either .. it’s so distracting my speed went way down and it’s so frustrating to play now, my eyes hurt 😦

This is a really great feature in my opinion. Thanks!

That’s a really great added feature. Thanks for sharing!

This is actual trash I hate this new update please change it back.

Or at least bring back the one lines option back. Please.

Would you care to elaborate on why you don’t like it?

I like it overall, but I agree that an option to disable the cursor element would be nice.

I like this feature. Though it has tripped me up a few times, I’m getting used to it. Very nice update.

I don’t like the way now it highlights your typing progress, character by character, as you are going along and I would like to at least have the option to turn this feature off and have it be like before-at least for those who wish. While I understand that many typing applications, such as Mavis Beacon, 10 fast fingers and others, have this feature, I’ve always appreciated that typeracer didn’t.

The problem with this feature is that by giving typists constant visual feedback about how far along they are into each word they are typing, the typists start to rely on this “crutch” so to speak. It is helpful for beginners, but I believe having this “crutch” involuntarily imposed on everyone can ultimately hinder someone’s endeavor to truly learn touch-typing.

Consider having a printed manuscript on your desk that you must copy into a Word Doc. Your eyes will be on the source you are typing from, and not on the screen feedout. If you wish to be accurate, you have to just ‘know in your fingers & brain’ exactly how far along you are into each of the words you are typing, and you will be without the crutch of this constant visual feedback. Therefore I believe this particular new feature is a disservice, as it may easily lead people to rely on a degree of visual feedback that won’t be available to them in real world touch-typing situations.

Amazing, I totaly love it as well, as the fixed typing correction! I mean that now if I misstyped the word before I don’t have to remove the one written correctly, which I realy looked forward to.

The replay is really nice for reviewing my mistakes and seeing which character sequences I struggle with.

I think the prompter it’s not working correctly anymore. I feel lag on the words that i type. If i write first letter of a word wrong it doesn’t show there was a mistake until i try to type second letter. The hard texts where i do mistakes are really hard to type currently since i notice late where was the mistake. And the color for the text that i wrote it’s so hard on the eyes aswell .. by the end of a large text i feel i have a flashlight in my eye 😦 Also several times the very last word of the text didn’t stop the timer even when i wrote it correctly. I had to press one more random letter. Hope all gets fixed ❤

Hey I left a comment Saturday soon after the update (I was the first commentor) criticizing the new way text was highlighting. I see that it was not approved, but that you have been open to the criticism others have voiced, and incorporated an option to switch to the old style.

However, I don’t recall the old style ever underlining, which is what it now does. Can you modify the old multi-line style to be as if the update was never applied, and remove the underlining, too?

The classic input used for the past few years has always had underlining – we’ve brought back the classic input to meet popular demand! Hope you enjoy it.

I’m not sure what people find distracting. This is great! I think I’m actually faster and more accurate with this new interface (based on two data points…).

Good luck as you continue to improve your typing speed on the site! It’s great to hear that the new features are helping out.

This is a great feature. Now I can analyze my typing.

Glad to hear! Hope you continue to find it useful.

First of all, thank you for continually trying to make the site better. We are indeed fortunate that you care so much about typing 😉

Question about the accuracy: I just did a race with 35 words and had mistakes in 5 words. A simple word accuracy would calc out to 85.7%, but the page is showing 97.5%. Are you basing on letter count?

thanks

Love it. One small bug. If you put your cursor right near the top of one of the columns in the chart (a high column like 90 or 95), the hover text shows up right at the cursor. Since the cursor is there, it disappears. It then reappears, disappears, etc. producing a steady blink.

Thanks for letting us know!

The replay consistently shows higher WPM than the score I get on races. Is this by design, or should I look into my browser setup?

Hi Christian – we are aware of this and it’s not your browser setup.
